This Town is near the Land where the Battle of Majuba was fought, where the Transvaal won independence from the British. It was decided suitable for a new Town to be founded on the Mpumalanga / KwaZulu Natal border.

The town was established in 1888 Lying at 1,664 m above sea level in the upper reaches of the Vaal River basin on the banks of the Schulpspruit. The bridge over the Vaal River was built in 1896 and is a national monument.
